How to Apply for Membership on Area Board 10

Area Board 10 is governed by a 17-member volunteer Board of Directors appointed either by the Governor or the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Periodically, vacancies occur on Area Board 10 when a board member's term expires or when an unexpected resignation occurs. We are always looking for interested individuals with developmental disabilities, parents of people with disabilities, or community members who:

ˇ        are concerned about the need for quality services for persons with developmental disabilities;

ˇ        want to advocate for children and adults with developmental disabilities to lead productive and satisfying lives within their communities;

ˇ        enjoy being on the cutting edge of innovations in the disability field; and

ˇ        want to educate policymakers and the public about the abilities of persons with disabilities.

A few things you should know:

ˇ        Our Board meets on the first Thursday of every month at 4:30 PM, except for August and December.

ˇ        Our Board meeting location is usually in Glendale, but 3 or 4 meetings each year are held at different locations throughout Los Angeles County, as part of our community outreach.

ˇ        In order to prevent conflicts of interest, State law requires that members of Area Boards may not be employees or board members of any agency that receives state funds to provide services to people with developmental disabilities.

ˇ        You must be a resident of Los Angeles County.

ˇ        It is helpful if the applicant has some familiarity or background associated with disability issues.

ˇ        For appointment by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, please mail or email your resumé to the Area Board 10 office. (See "Contact Us.") When there are vacancies representing specific Supervisorial districts, we will then forward it to the appropriate County Supervisor.

 

ˇ        For appointment by the Governor, you must fill out the Governor's online application by going to www.gov.ca.gov and clicking on "Appointments" on the menu along the top. If you fill out a Governor's application, please inform our office so that we may periodically follow up on the application status.

Please note that membership on Area Board 10 is dependent on available vacancies, and selection decisions may take many months. The Area Board has no role in selecting members. We simply forward your materials to the appointing body for their consideration.
